Tarsier as flagship species

Tarsier are charismatic and broadly distributed. Tarsier have little or no economic value and do not eat crops. Indeed, tarsiers eat crop pests. There are no logical reason for local people to object to tarsiers’ presence and several good reason to welcome them. The presence of tarsiers in animal markets as well as their status as models of popular icons such as the Star Wars character, Yoda, indicates that human have an innate fascination with these animals. In the absence of ther options, tarsier could be enlisted as flagship species to promote conservation of wildlife habitat throughout the region.

Tarsier are well-known on the Philippine island of Bohol for their role as flagship species. This is true to a lesser extent for the Tangkoko Nature Reserve near Manado, in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. But more can be done to promote tarsier as flagships for conservation.
